How does the licensing works when giving for free a template to users?

Hello,

I would like to know how your licensing works in these cases please:

1)Creating templates using your blocks, changing the text and image content to fit a specific purpose and offering the template for free to users for download.

2)Creating templates using your blocks, changing the text and image content to fit a specific purpose but reselling the template to 1000s of users.

3)Creating templates using your blocks, changing the text and image content to fit a specific purpose, adding a back end admin panel but reselling the template to 1000s of users.

Thank you!

Regards,

Ben

Hey Ben,

At the moment here is what the license permits and does not permit.

Permits: Creating websites, designs, mockups for yourself, clients, or organizations.

Does not Permit: Taking templates or parts of the templates to sell on stocks, markets, or share for free.

Let me also tag @tnylea in case that he might want to add more information!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Bobby,

Thank you for the reply. I see, so your license only permits 1 on 1 designs.

In my case, I stopped doing 1 on 1 as the market is dying(was doing it for 10 years). I only wanted to use your solution to build a page for my users so they could resell my own products and services. eg: I have an affiliate and needed my users to have designs so they could setup their own landing pages and help me resell my own IT services.

From what I understand, this is not possible, in this case your license will be far too limiting for me to be able to use your software as 1 on 1 design is something many of us are moving away from. I wish I had known this before :-(

Thanks,

Ben

Best Answer

Hey Ben,

Let me clarify on what would be allowed with our templates. As you can understand we do not allow our templates to be re-used simply for the purpose of re-selling them; however, if they are being used as a base template and modified enough to be unrecognized as "Tails blocks from DevDojo", it would be okay to re-sell them.

I do believe that most designs are inspired from other designs. That's just how the world of designs works. Some aspects of components and website may look similar to others if they are used as a basis for creativity.

Let me clarify what would be okay for re-sell 👇

Not allowed: Designs in Tails are used to re-sell without any modification.

Not allowed: If only the copy and images are replaced and every other aspect of the design is the same, that would also be against the license.

Allowed: Copy, images, and structure of the design are modified. In this case it would be okay to re-sell the designs because they will technically be different designs.

If someone sees the designs that you are re-selling and can visibly recognize these as "Tails designs", this would be against the license.

I hope that helps and I do understand that this is kind of a gray area so if you have any other questions please let us know and we'll try and do our best to answer.

Thanks! Hope you have a great day!

Thank you so much @tnylea, yes now I get it, I simply need to add a bit more custom design to the whole pages and this should be ok. Yes I totally understand that templates made of blocks cannot be resold "as is".

Great, at least now I know I can still use your solution:-)

Thanks again for taking the time to explain everything
