Nearing the start of Hacktoberfest 2020

Nearing the start of Hacktoberfest 2020

Hacktoberfest is back! ๐ŸŽ‰

Hacktoberfest 2020 edition being less than a month away from starting - the challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to contribute to open-source projects between October 1st and the 31st, to earn a limited-edition Hacktoberfest t-shirt.

That is the official word taken straight from the landing page, but Hacktoberfest is so much more than the swag bags maintainers give out to contributors during this time, it's a celebration of the open-source community, really it's a challenge to encourage contributors to increase their contributions.

For maintainers, it's a chance to give back to their contributors in the form of swag bags, that can range from t-shirts, stickers, mugs, and more. Snyk for the 2019 edition planted a tree on your behalf, and I'm hearing rumors DigitalOcean might be giving you the option to do the same for their swag bag this year.

Rules of Hacktoberfest ๐Ÿค

To qualify for the official Hacktoberfest swag options, you must register and make four pull requests between October 1-31. Pull requests can be made to any public repository on GitHub, not just the ones with issues labeled Hacktoberfest. If a maintainer reports your pull request as spam or behavior, not in line with Hacktoberfestโ€™s quality standards, you will be ineligible to participate.

Those are the official rules DigitalOcean has, but each maintainer has their own requirements, on some, you have to close three issues, on some, you simply have to make a single pull request, below I've included a list if you want to view previous years requirements per maintainer.

hacktoberfestswaglist will be around this year as well to provide quick access to maintainers giving away swag bags, so if you find one and its not on the list, consider contributing to the project.

If you do want to participate in Hacktoberfest this year, keep a lookout for the #hacktoberfest label on GitHub next month, and be sure to sign-up with GitHub on the official page to track your progress.

Hope to see you on the open-source circuit this coming month. ๐Ÿ‘
