Making sense of money

The problem

Meridian had the data — every account, every transaction, categorized and charted. What users didn't have was an answer. Session recordings showed the same loop: open the app, glance at the balance, scroll past the charts, close the app. All that analysis, and nobody felt any calmer about their money.

The approach

We reframed the home screen around a single sentence: you're on track this month — or you're not, and here's the one thing throwing it off. The balance became the headline, the progress bar underneath it became the story, and everything else earned its place only if it changed that sentence.

The hardest part was subtraction. Six chart types became one weekly spending bar. Fourteen categories collapsed into the four people actually think in. Every removal was fought for with usage data and won.

What shipped

A home screen that loads to an answer, not a dashboard. Weekly check-in sessions went up 3×, and average session length went down — which was the point. People stopped studying their money and started trusting it.
