Deshed season, without the sore shoulders
Fall is the busiest eight weeks of the year for double coats. Price the deshed as its own service, cap it at two a day, and let the regulars in first.

There are two times of year when every husky, shepherd and golden in town decides to come apart at once. Spring is the famous one. Fall is the one that catches groomers out, because it lands in the same weeks as back-to-school schedules and the first holiday bookings. From late September to mid-November, a van that is normally comfortable can find itself double-booked in its head and half-empty on paper.
I ran one van in Boise for nine years. These are the things I wish I had done before my third fall, not my sixth.
A deshed is not a bath
A proper deshed on a husky is 90 minutes on a good day: blow-out, bath, conditioner, a second blow-out, and brushing until the undercoat stops coming. If your booking link sells it as a 60-minute bath, you will run late by the second stop and stay late all day.
Give it its own service with its own length and its own price. Across Bramble the middle price for a large-dog deshed is $126, about a third more than a bath, and nobody who owns a husky is surprised by that.
Cap them per day
Two desheds a day is a workout. Three is an injury. Set a cap of two, put them first and last, and fill the middle with small dogs. Your shoulders will still work in December, and your van’s filters will thank you.
Book the regulars before you open the season
- In the first week of September, text every double-coated dog on your list and offer them a slot before anyone else.
- Offer two visits, four to five weeks apart. One deshed in October is a start. Two actually gets the coat out.
- Whatever is left on September 15 goes on the public booking link.
Riley Achterberg at Foxglove Mobile fills 86% of fall deshed slots this way before the season starts, all from clients who rebook in the driveway.
Keep a short waitlist, and use it
Fall is also when plans change. Soccer moves to Tuesdays, someone travels. A cancelled deshed is a 90-minute hole, which is hard to fill with one phone call and easy to fill with a list. Keep six to ten names of people who said “any time, just text me,” and note what part of town they live in. When a stop cancels at 9 AM, the nearest name gets the offer first.
Tell owners what to do at home
A five-minute brush every other day between visits is the difference between a 90-minute deshed and a two-hour one with a matting fee. Say it at the first fall visit and put it in the after-photo text: one line, no lecture. The owners who do it get a better-looking dog, and you get your afternoon.
Deshed season is the best eight weeks of revenue in the year if you price it as its own service, cap it, and let your regulars in first. It is the worst eight weeks if you let the calendar happen to you.
