Kerning Club

Kerning Club shows you a word with one letter knocked out of position and asks you to put it back. It scores you on how close you got, in thousandths of an em, and then it shows you the designer's original spacing over the top of yours.

Built in a week, played for a year

It was a weekend experiment that got picked up by a type foundry's newsletter and did about four hundred thousand rounds over the following year. I learned more about performance from that week than from any project I have been paid for — the first version repainted the entire canvas on every pointer move, which is fine on a laptop and unusable on a phone.

Archived, deliberately

The fonts it shipped with were licensed for a demo, not for a service, and renewing that properly would have meant turning a toy into a business. It is frozen, it still runs, and I have left the source up for anyone who wants to do it properly with fonts they own.
